Visitors will enjoy the luxury and ambience of this beautiful historic home on Taylor Street dubbed as “Silk Stocking Row” in the 1930’s. The restored Mediterranean style mansion was built in the early thirties by R.L. and Ola Hill who owned prosperous ice plants throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Later, he became a partner in building a huge processing factory with Howard E. Butt, a successful grocer, whose namesake HEB is at present, a huge grocery chain throughout the State of Texas. Eleanor Roosevelt was a famous guest as well as Gov. W Lee O’Daniels. The home has notable architectural elements that include arched doorways, windows, and a 550 lb hand carved door. The panels of this mesquite door depict the four scenes of how the valley evolved from brushy area inhabited by Indians to the present day valley with citrus and palm trees. Stepping inside the house is like going back in time with well appointed antique pieces that are collected by the owner from all over the world and auctions. The backyard has a beautiful pergola, a swing and chairs for the guests to sit and enjoy the flowers and birds that visit the area. A full breakfast is served in the morning in the breakfast room with a full view of the garden and the pool.

The Wildest Bed and Breakfast in Texas. Located adjacent to the justly famous Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, CSA was built in 2001specifically as a country inn for birders, butterfly/dragonfly enthusiasts, wildlife photographers and others with a desire to experience as much of the natural Valley as possible. It features five rooms, three in the guest house with two extra long twin beds in each, and two rooms in a wing of the main house, one with a king and the other with a queen. All rooms have outside entrances and bathrooms. There is a common room/kitchen/TV room/laundry where guests generally gather to eat and talk. The grounds offer a spectacular bird feeding station/photography blind, a short wildlife trail and several very productive butterfly gardens; there are frequent evening outings for owls, Pauraques, and other creatures of the night. There is a pool guests can use, weather permitting. The grounds are completely fenced, and have ample secure parking behind the guest house. In short, CSA is a modern, comfortable, inviting facility in the heart of the Valley's finest remaining habitat. Owners Judy and John McClung are always eager to welcome you to the inn and, as long-time serious birders, help you plan your trip to get the most possible out of the time you have.

El Canelo Ranch has been in continuous ownership and operation by Monica's family for over 125 years. For the past 20 years Monica and Ray Burdette have opened up their home and their ranch to guests anxious to enjoy memorable outdoor experiences in luxurious surroundings. Bird watching on this pristine South Texas ranch is phenomenal, with over 300 species of birds on the unofficial ranch bird list. Customized hunting packages also available, including whitetail deer, nilgai, quail, dove, wild boar, and javelina hunts. The Inn has five elegantly decorated guests rooms each with at least two double beds and private bath. WiFi available throughout. Overnight stay includes supper on night of arrival, breakfast on day of departure, all three meals on middle days of multiple-night stay, and access to the ranch for nature-related activities, such as bird watching, nature photography, and walking. Private tennis court also available for guest use. The most memorable part of being a guest of The Inn at El Canelo is undoubtedly the fine cuisine. Monica's attendance at cooking schools abroad and here in the USA has given her skills that allow her to personally prepare delectable meals for her guests. It would be hard to say if your favorite will be her "South-Meets-Southwest Eggs" for breakfast, her "Nilgai Chalupas" for lunch, or her "Pork Loin with Pecan Brandy Sauce" for supper. Monica says her only secret is her closely-guarded recipe for her house specialty cocktail: "Champagne Margaritas." Visit our website for complete details and to make a reservation!

With the creation of Falcon Reservoir in the mid 1900's, this historic family home was moved from the original town site to what is now modern Zapata, Texas. Today the completely renovated historic home is operated as a B&B by descendants of the original family. In keeping with the family's continuing desire to create and preserve native habitat, the grounds have been planted with species indigenous to the area. Local birds and other native animals frequent the yard and use the various feeding stations.
